Well, as I have always thought, don't listen to GP's. My Son got kicked out of the Royal Adelaide Hospital without them taking X-Rays so I took him to Modbury Hospital. Got x-rays and the GP swore black and blue that there was nothing one can do with a Collar bone in three pieces. They heal themselves. I insisted the x-rays get sent to the Bone people. They would contact my Son in two days. They didn't but never mind, persistence is the key. Finally, this week, two weeks later, he sees a Specialist and he just got wheeled out of Theatre with a 6 inch plate inserted otherwise he would have had difficulty reaching above his head for the rest of his life and pain and a narrowed shoulder. There ya go. Sad to say but it doesn't pay to listen to a word they say without getting it checked.

So what does South Australia think about the fact that it is now official. The State Government Department of Community Welfare has been responsible for "Take Away Kids" now for 30 years, dishing them out to the States Pedophiles for weekend Sport and along the way, 391 have died. The Perpetrators have been members of the Justice Department, the Supreme Court, Lawyers, Judges, the Premier of the State, celebrity Hair Dresser and other high flying Business people. In one case, three of them were allocated to a Brothel and received supervisory visits by Social Workers who found all OK. If any of my American readers know any good Script writers or Film Executives, tell them that the greatest crime story in the history of the World is here to be told and it would be a block buster. Murders of young Men drugged and operated on whilst alive, their Defense Councilor found in his Freezer and a young bloke getting 20 years goal for it but he was not guilty, the Attorney General of Australia leaving the premises that night and the list goes on and on and on. So lock up your Kids if you live in this State. The City of Churches and the City of Pedophiles

Did you hear that Kevin Rudd is going to be lynched for saluting to George. OMG!!! Slit your wrist all :)

LETTER OF THE DAY

Hey John

I've just broken in my clydie cross on my own using purely your methods and he is going great.

Ive been riding him out in the bush and it's like he has been doing it all his life. Have just started leg yielding - day 3 today (total of about 12 rides overall). He is a very quick learner.

One thing however is that he yields perfectly off the inside leg but runs (or walks) out the shoulder in the arena - at the gate of course. Does it both ways and he just gives his head to the inside and he just barges his way to the outside.

I had been trying to correct this with a bit of inside rein to keep him facing away from gate (not much as he already gives his head with nose almost touching knee due to his short neck) and lots of outside leg but I know that's not the answer - even though it did end up working a couple of times.

Watching your brilliant leg yielding DVD, I realise the answer to this is to teach him the counter bend.
I just want to clarify what I should do. Say we walk on the left rein and we approach the gate. Should I tip his nose to the right (outside) towards the gate and keep him going with the outside leg? I just need some clarification on the aids for this problem as you only touch on it briefly in your dvd.

many thanks

sue

Hi Sue,

In fact Sue, no. At this stage of the proceedings and there is a time and place for each step, it is too soon for counter bend. Virtually every young Horse I start, try that on the arena. The answer is to warn them as you go past the spot on each lap with increased strength of riding, all the way up to kicking with the outside leg only and depending upon the personality of the Horse, that may do it but not with a lot of them. The next lap, I have my right split rein laying over my right shoulder, held in my hand ready and at the crucial time, when I feel the Horse ignoring my strong outside leg and inside rein, I slap him down the right shoulder hard enough to shock the horse to go left. That is the warning and normally that is enough however, depending upon the personality of the Horse, next lap they may need it again and harder if they dare. Three times is the maximum I have had it and normally twice is the most. In your case, you would carry the Dressage whip in the outside hand and down the shoulder. Use the same.

Yes, once a Horse is a little further along, counter bend of course and you turn it into a training opportunity but at this stage you would never go there. To early and confusion likely. Remember, forward is everything. Sounds rather course but believe me it works every time. Regards

LETTERS OF THE DAY

Hi John

I have been given heaps of differing information on this topic, and I thought if anyone would know for sure it would be John O'Leary!!

So my question is: Is it safe to float a horse in a rope halter or should I float in a webbing halter? Had plenty of people say ropes are fine, and plenty that say NO always in a webbing! Crikey this sport we choose is confusing! LOL!!

Thanks John!

Haha, that is because there is just so much info and so many different ways to look at things. As always, the complete Horse person is flexible and ever mindful of the surrounding circumstances, like the danger posed by the Float. ie. Rope Halter is fine but crap Pony Club rope should be used, not a Parelli rope which will not Break. or Webbing Halter and crap Pony Club rope, both will break. or rope halter and parelli rope but tied to twine or telecom rope as rope will break BUT IF THERE ARE THINGS TO BE CAUGHT UP ON BECAUSE OF POOR DESIGN OF FLOAT, no rope halters. That clear it up? I could go on :)

Hi John

Pass on to Nat – well done on the leg restraint. And you know I understand exactly how she feels. It’s terrifying John, to stand there with this 16.2 OTTB knowing this is it. Can I do this? Have I prepared enough? Will I kill him? Will he kill me? The adrenalin. Oh but the elation when it all works out. Was Nat on her own? I had a man to help pull that last bit – not strong enough. But he made sure I could do the speedy knot and made me practice to ensure we got the leg up and tied off as smooth as. If Nat got the leg up on her own she is Wonder Women – Megan Gale watch out!!
But you give such solid instruction John, we could but only succeed. Top job Nat, you did the girls proud!!

Thanks.

Luv

Tracy x

Perhaps I should salute her? :) She was better than I Tracy. She was inventive and came up with the Ladies fitting :) How good is that? She was at my Clinic over there.....

Hi John,

Any idea of when you and Linda will be heading up to ACT/NSW to do some clinics this year? There are a couple of us who are keen as mustard to book in and don't want to miss out. If you can let us know when it is likely to be, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Jan.

Hi Jan, we are going to do that next Summer. They will be more personal Clinic where we can get more done and give people more of our attention. You say and your friends and associates. We are going to work right through to Queensland. Regards

John,

Thought you may be interested in these stats, shame not everyone replied.

Especially the racing industry since they seemed to voice there opinions so much during the outbreak !

The AHIC were of great assistance with keeping the updates and information flowing on a daily basis, they deserve a pat on the back.

Thanks. Very interesting figures. I see a Horse has been tested positive in New Zealand :(

3rd April, 2008

Got stuck into building of stables today and finished the frames on two plus two tack rooms. Very pleasing. Later in the day I got asked by the Boss to commence Breaking in a Riding Pony by part time as the owners come for lessons each week :) I did as I was asked of course :) I couldn't help noticing another of their Horses, a ridden Show Horse, that had a shocking rear hoof problem where the same old  problem had contributed to the hoof turning to the right and flaring because it was too low on the outside. So many horses wear the outside of the near side hind down and that puts pressure on their patella and causes the hoof to turn inwards, compounding the problem. Being cut back and trimmed tomorrow so we will see how he went :)

LISTEN TO YOUR HORSES

There is a lovely quite old Horse and he has been ridden 'on the bit' but never successfully. The continual attempt to put him in a frame and into the 'sweet spot' but never happened. Over a year of this type of riding. The rider recently became aware that there must be a better way and has been more vigilant in their efforts to achieve softness with the 'on the bit' work, that being the only style of riding the owner knows having moved here from England. The old Horse has been acting a little strange lately. Jig Jogging, head chucking, reefing at the halt and did a 'pee off' the other day. I was asked my opinion and whilst I was talking to the owner, the old Horse was twisting and throwing his head and neck high in the air as Horses do when they are shitty. What is he saying? Why does 'old faithful' suddenly change personality? Well it could be that he has enough of being pulled on the mouth without and light at the end of the tunnel. Just endless pulling for no gain. Just pain perhaps. Regardless however, he sure is trying to send a message to his owner. It may be something else but my bet would be that he is asking Mum to go get some extra knowledge so that she can form a better partnership.

I have handed the new Horse of the young Lady who we had our moment with this week and he hasn't put a foot wrong. She is having a lesson on him on Saturday so that should make her pretty happy.

DRESSAGE QUALIFICATIONS

Talking about Dressage qualifications this week and that there has been new rules come out that requires higher percentages to get quallies, is it possible that only 4 people on the entire programme got qualies then? Perhaps someone who knows about rules could tell me???
