ANIMAL CRUELTY IN
QUEENSLAND
AND THE APPALLING LACK OF ACTION
20th October, 2007
Queensland Government again.
Their annual Wild Horse Cull. Done
in such a wonderful way :(

Hi John, Kathryn passed on your
email address to me.
Our web site is www.savethebrumbies.org
We are working very hard on this latest massacre in Qld.
I will keep you informed. Attached are photos:
photo one: horse shot in rump and gut, left to die
photo two: mare shot, foal left orphaned, note the sweat on the foal's
coat, result of terror and stress.
Don't be shocked, we deal with this all the time.
We have made progress in NSW since the Guy Fawkes slaughter in 2000 but
it's still dead horses, whichever way we go. Horses we can't take, we
handle over 60 per year, are consigned directly to abattoirs, maybe one
day, it will be a brighter world for our Heritage brumbies.
Any exposure you can give is greatly appreciated. Feel free to use the
photos, we have copyright.
All the best, Jan Carter for STB Inc.
This is just a snap shot of what is
happening around Australia because people cannot and will not look after
their horses. There also appears to me more and more people with psycho
problems that want to collect horses and this is how a lot of them treat
them. The R.S.P.C.A. in this Country falls well short of protecting them
and show more interest to Dogs and Cats than horses.
It is high time that horse
ownership was licensed with potential owners having to do an 8 weeks
T.A.F.E. Course, one night a week and learn about the things that matter
in horse ownership. Then pass a test. Then they should be sent to a
second course on Pasture management and Environmental Horse Keeping.

UPDATE
I am assured that things are going
better up there and that the Aboriginal people are learning new ways.
AGONY: A brumby with an untreated shoulder wound

Shame of the horse torturers

THE State Government has refused to intervene in what has been described
as Queensland's worst case of mass animal cruelty.
Hundreds of wild horses on Palm Island, 65km off north Queensland, have
endured torture, beatings and starvation but RSPCA inspectors say the
Department of Primary Industries has "washed its hands" of the issue.
In response to horrific photographic and anecdotal evidence of gruesome
stabbings, beatings and burning of horses by teenage gangs, Primary
Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said the department would finance a
"Help an Animal Smile" education program.
Inspectors are outraged. They are also frustrated they have been refused
government help to remove the tortured animals and prosecute the
offenders.
Senior inspectors with decades of experience were reduced to tears at the
plight of some animals on the most recent trip to the island three weeks
ago.
Veteran inspector Mal Holland said: "This is the worst case on a mass
scale of cruelty and neglect we have ever seen in this state and our hands
are tied. It is heart-breaking.
"The only way those horses can be saved is if you get them off the
island."
Some extreme abuse and cruelty cases include:
• BRUMBIES having their legs bound tightly together with wire and beaten
with blocks of wood;
• A MARE being slashed with a sickle before battery acid was poured over
its wounds;
• A MARE in foal being stabbed in the stomach;
• A HORSE deliberately wedged between a pole and a house and left to die;
• FOALS ridden at a gallop in tropical heat until they collapsed and died;
• HORSES with their hooves worn down to the flesh being galloped on
bitumen roads using wire bridles which shred their mouths;
• HIDEOUS fly-blown saddle sores the size of dinner plates, left
untreated;
• HORSES flogged with barbed wire and impaled with objects.
Mr Holland said dealing with the situation was made more difficult because
residents "protected" one another.
"When you find a horse in terrible condition, they refuse to say who owns
it. It is almost impossible to prosecute unless you have someone on the
island full-time."
Mr Holland's frustrated colleagues say they are also battling apathetic
and scared bureaucrats who cite "cultural sensitivity".
The Australian Army has had a vet and veterinary nurse on the island for
11 days and a secret plan was hatched recently to rescue and evacuate 30
of the most appalling cases to the mainland by barge.
However, this was abandoned when the DPI refused to finance the rescue
amid warnings the islanders would stop anyone "taking the animals from
them".
Palm Islanders, renowned for their mustering skills, say the horses are an
important part of their cultural heritage.
Late last week, a DPI spokesman said an animal welfare team from Brisbane
would meet the island council tomorrow or Tuesday.
Palm Island Aboriginal Council chairman Alfred Lacey did not return calls
from The Sunday Mail.
Should anyone from around the World wish to
express their contempt about this matter, please contact the Govt Minister
below.
You could also cancel your next trip to
Queensland and go to another State. It does not deserve the patronage of
horse lovers'
